Etsu Egami is a Japanese contemporary artist represented by KORNFELD Galerie Berlin. Growing up between Japan, the United States, and Europe, Etsu Egami developed a practice rooted in cross-cultural communication — the gap between what is said and what is heard, the visual residue of mistranslation and mishearing. Working in large-scale oil on canvas, Etsu Egami renders this invisible friction in fields of prismatic colour interrupted by dense networks of interwoven lines.
Etsu Egami graduated with a B.F.A. from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing in 2016, and pursued her M.F.A. at CAFA under the mentorship of painter Liu Xiao Dong, followed by studies at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HFG) in Karlsruhe, Germany. In 2023, Etsu Egami was dispatched to New York by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan. Etsu Egami currently lives and works between Tokyo and New York.
KORNFELD Galerie Berlin has presented Etsu Egami's work at leading international art fairs across Europe and Asia, including Art Karlsruhe (2025, 2026), Art Cologne (2024, 2025), KIAF Seoul (2025), Asia Now Paris (2024), West Bund Art & Design Shanghai (2024), and Art Düsseldorf (2026). At Art Karlsruhe 2025, Etsu Egami's One-Artist Show was awarded the art karlsruhe Preis for outstanding solo presentations.
Etsu Egami's work has been recognised with Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 (2020, 2021), Most Popular Artist on Artsy (2021), and the Sovereign Asian Art Prize (2019). Institutional exhibitions include the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Grand Palais, Paris; the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; and Para Site Art Space, Hong Kong, among others.
