Overview

Susanne Roewer's sculptures and paintings play with representational motifs and combine a variety of different materials. The artist borrows from the natural sciences to give material expression to her ideas and thoughts.

The dark time at the end of the year, decorated with special lights, is a time for review. What was the flood of images and experiences that washed up over the year? What was swept away, and what was destroyed? Some things glow more than before in the darkness, but closer inspection also reveals cracks, dents, holes.

Beginning 1 December, Galerie Kornfeld presents Berlin-based artist Susanne Roewer (b. 1971). Her sculptures and paintings play with representational motifs and combine a wide variety of materials. Drawing inspiration from the natural sciences, the artist gives material form to her ideas and thoughts.

The dark period at the end of the year—illuminated by festive lights—is a time for reflection. What was the flood of images and experiences that swept over the year? What was carried away, and what was destroyed? Some elements shine more brightly than before in the darkness, yet closer inspection reveals cracks, dents and holes.

Similar processes form the basis of Susanne Roewer’s paintings and sculptures. An illuminated central motif is washed over by shiny new layers. Accompanying ornaments attach themselves, become encrusted, and are dragged away again by the current. This torrent of images does not necessarily result in a relentless sequence of beautiful illustrations. Only the toughest surfaces of the original object can withstand constant erosion unscathed. What remains is altered—worn down and scarred over time.
